Amarillo College’s mission is to transform its community and economy through learning, innovation and achievement. In accordance to the faculty handbook the instructors at AC help each student to succeed.

AC instructors have office hours, a designated time to meet with the students whether it be to make up a test, assignment or to simply drop in and say hello.

Dean of STEM, Edie Carter, said faculty post their office hours outside their office doors. They also have them listed on their syllabus that is linked in Blackboard.

Carter said some instructors hold office hours in different ways, offering both face-to-face and online options. “Specifically for online students or students who do not live in the Amarillo community, some teachers have email, Zoom or the Remind App,” Carter said.

The Remind App allows connection with instructor and student in texting in over ninety languages, scheduling messages ahead of time and privacy protections. Through Remind, faculty can also send and collect paperwork digitally.

“Over the years, office hours have been helpful for building relationships between students and their professor,” Becky Easton, dean of liberal arts, said. “I know there were times we would take care of the issue and you would get to know one another on a more personal level and those are the students that come back and check in with you.”

Office hours are important especially in terms of illness or if students need to make up assignments or tests.

“I went this morning actually,” Kimberly Long, a health science major, said. “I had to make up a test. My kid had a procedure done on Monday and I had a test, he let me retake it.”

Hannah Tuttle, a nursing major, said she had emailed an instructor after being hospitalized about making up an assignment and they got back to her within an hour. “I did that like at midnight and I was not expecting their response,” Tuttle said.
