Theater provides opportunities to compete, have fun

The Amarillo College theater department will produce a show called “Drowning Girls” to be performed Dec. 3-6. The play also will compete in Region 6 of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. AC has participated in this competition for several years. Also competing will be other colleges in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Monty Downs, theatrical director and instructor, invites AC students and employees to attend the department’s performances. “Seeing a performance done in person is totally different than you would ever see in any movie,” Downs said. “There’s no cuts and no breaks.” He said live performances make him feel like nothing else. AC has a theater club and honor society called Delta Psi Omega. “Joining Delta psi Omega is really easy and a lot of fun. The student must maintain a 2.5 GPA,” said theater major Sarai Dinkens-Agalaba. She said the best way to join Delta Psi Omega is to discuss it with Downs. Theater major Alastair Ramirez said this semester the theater students performed “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and that next semester, they will perform “Rent” March 10-13 and “Afterlife: A Ghost Story” May 5-8. Those interested can call Downs at 806-371-5358.
