Country music is a big deal in West Texas. When we even have our own subgenre (Texas/red dirt country), it is safe to assume it is something we take pretty seriously. The Randy Rogers Band is a perfect example of everything Texas country represents, which is five laidback, seemingly normal, guys having a good time doing what they love. Randy Rogers has a soft, twangy, classic country-style voice that could put anyone at ease. His stage presence makes it seem as if he is at home while in front of a mic, which makes perfect sense because the band is celebrating its 15th year. These down-home boys have made the road their home.On Sept. 18, the band put on a toe-tapping, dance-filled, crowd-swaying performance at Midnight Rodeo. RRB is really good at staying connected with the crowd. Rogers and guitarist Geoffrey Hill had plenty of guitar picks to generously pass out to the screaming front row. RRB kept the energy up throughout the night with new and old favorites such as “Fuzzy” and “Tonight’s Not the Night (For Goodbye).” Brady Black, the band’s extremely talented fiddle player who is from the area, shelled out numerous solos showing off not only how talented he is, but playing the sounds of Texas country that keep the shows packed with dedicated fans each year. Song after song, the band kept the crowd in a constant singalong state, partly thanks to its catchy, strong lyrics and the overall humble vibe. Despite having five of its seven albums peak in the Top 10 U.S. charts, the musicians make the crowd feel as if they all are lifelong friends who are just having a backyard jam session. They ended their performance with some of their best-known hits, which include “Kiss me in the Dark,” a perfect mix of lyrical bliss, and upbeat melodies that are perfect for a fun night out dancing with that special someone. The Randy Rogers Band can transform a smoky, dim-lit room full of strangers into a comfort zone. Whether you are having an enjoyable night out with friends, a date night or just want a momentary escape from your day-to-day life, this band will deliver just that.
