OPINION: Music makes the world go round

Music is one of those things in life that is universal. I think life would be empty without it. It’s essential to humanity as we know it.

Music has been around since the beginning of time. Even before it could be recorded or written down, there was music.

As music progressed through the years and more instruments were created, the styles of music were ever changing and evolving. From the Renaissance period to the Baroque period to the Romantic period, every era had a different feel to the sound of the music.

Now more than ever, there are more genres that give people a wider variety to choose from. Rock, classical, rap, country, movie scores, gospel, techno, and those few genres are just the tip of all that is being created every day.

Every person has a type of music that they prefer or like to listen to over other genres, and every type of music affects people in different ways.

Some music makes people happy and is uplifting, while other styles can be irritating to some. For example, I cannot stand country music. I just get mad when I hear it, but to some it’s the only thing they listen to.

Music relates to everyone in one way or another, and there’s something that appeals to each individual. That is one of the reasons why music is so important. The taste of the music desired also depends on the mood of the person who is listening.

I know that when I’m in a good mood, I can listen to just about anything, but when I’m in a funk or I’m angry, I tend to listen to more heavy rock because it helps me get out my emotions.

Putting feelings aside, though, music also can help heal. There’s a relatively new occupation that is becoming more practiced around the world called music therapy. The job uses the power of music to calm and treat people who have gone through incredible tragedies in their lives.

The patients sometimes can have a hard time coping with the events they have undergone and expressing what they are thinking about them, so therapists can help the patients use the right side of their brains to be able to accomplish those tasks by using music.

Using music, the patients are being creative, and it helps soothe them and grasp what they’ve gone through in a healthy manner.

Talking about being creative, music also can be an amazing outlet for people to express themselves in a way that nothing else can. Why else would there be so many aspiring musicians around the globe trying to make it “big”?

Of course, money is a factor, it almost always is, but some people are in the business strictly for the sake of the music.

The lead singer of the recently popular band Bastille admitted that he never wanted to get famous.

It just goes to show that music is that big of an influence in some people’s lives.

On top of that, look at all the people striving to make it on Broadway, people who play in an orchestra or even the street musicians who just need someone to hear their message. There are so many people, no matter where you go, who need music.

It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live or what culture you hail from. Everyone has music in their lives and is influenced by it.

Music has been making an impact on the world since the beginning of time, and it isn’t going anywhere.
