New members of the Amarillo College Student Government Association were sworn in for the 2013 fall semester Sept. 18.

The meeting was conducted in Badger Den of the College Union Building on the Washington Street Campus, and those who attended were served a lunch of fajitas.

“The SGA board serves as the voice of the student body,” said Heather Atchley, Student Life director.

Atchey said SGA members’ main goal is to help AC students connect by hosting annual events such as Fallfest and Spring Fling.

“It’s such an amazing opportunity to meet new people,” said Valorie Xayarath, a biology major and SGA chair holder.

The executive board will attend a community college SGA convention in Houston this semester.

The convention will consist of SGA executive board members from around Texas. They will attend lectures and see live bands and comedians who will perform at the convention.

“I encourage students to get involved in SGA, because it is a great way to develop leadership skills, meet new people, earn scholarships, travel and build your resume,” Atchley said.
