Free lunches are available for Amarillo College students from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday at the Baptist Student Ministry.

Free lunches are available to students, staff, faculty and anyone connected to AC. The purpose is to meet students, share with them and to love them.

People of all faiths are welcome at the BSM to take advantage of the free food.

Jenny Cummings, BSM director for three years, said, “We do have people of any faith come in. We have people with no faith who come.”

The BSM stems from a Christian background and its members like to talk about that, but there is no set weekly program.

Cummings described it as pressure-free.

The main objective of the BSM is to provide a place for students to meet and get to know each other. Members think the best way to show love to AC students is to give them free food.

“The only requirement to get the free lunch is to come hungry,” Cummings said.

The BSM is sponsored by many local church members who supply the food.

“I like to think of them as the little old ladies at the churches who bring us home-cooked food like spaghetti or barbecue beef,” Cummings said.

“If it’s the youth pastors who bring us food, it’s pizza.”

The menu varies from week to week but includes a wide variety of food.

Cummings said the BSM has been providing free lunches for students since it began more than 15 years ago. Students are welcome to stay for lunch, if they can.

“It’s come and go. A lot of people have class at noon, so they come before,” Cummings said.

“Some people have class until noon, so they come after, and some people just grab and go.”

The BSM encourages its members, especially those in leadership positions, to spread out and meet many students to keep the ministry diverse.

Members come from many faiths, including atheists.

Students looking to get a free lunch on Tuesdays can find the Baptist Student Ministry Center at 2123 S. Van Buren St., next to the Washington Street Campus.

The BSM also conducts worship services at 7:30 p.m. Monday nights.
