The Writers’ Corner offers assistance for students working on written assignments, like essays or research papers. Officially named the Writing Academic Success Center, this group of tutors aids with any written assignments, not just for English, but for every subject from science to history.
Professional Tutor Sean McDonald is a graduate of AC and assists students with revising papers and essays, ensuring they make the most of their assignments. “The drive for me is instilling in students that being successful isn’t just passing all of your classes. Being successful is being well rounded, learning how to use resources and instilling a greater sense of discipline,” McDonald said.
For Writers’ Corner Supervisor Ande Parlow, it is an opportunity for the tutors to learn what they themselves can do to help their students. “I enable them by making sure that they feel like they are appropriately trained, scheduled and able to voice their opinion about things as we move through,” Parlow said.
Victoria Coleman said she splits her time at AC between the Writers’ Corner and in class as an embedded tutor, where she helps students within the class itself.
“Sometimes I’ll take notes and I’ll send them to the students if I see that there are people absent,” Coleman said. She said she first joined the Writers’ Corner during her freshman year. “I really enjoyed it; I love to write. So when I saw that they were hiring, I was like, ‘I think I could do that.’” Coleman said she gradually grew to love helping others.
The Writers’ Corner is located in Ordway Hall, Room 104. They are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. They provide both in-person and virtual assistance.
“The best moments are when we get to kind of laugh together and celebrate because you finally learned how to do this skill,” Parlow said.
