Amarillo College holds a long history of academic excellence, social achievements and community advancements since its founding in 1929. Ever since, the standard for the leaders of the Badger community has steadily climbed to a high one that envelops the AC mission: transforming our community and economy through learning, innovation, and achievement.
As the college ushers in a new era under its first female president, Dr. Jamelle J. Conner, the stakes—and expectations—are higher than ever. The Ranger staff holds high hopes that she stays reliable in her role, holds respect to the diverse demographics, acknowledges the disadvantages the community has but most importantly, has a drive to succeed in ensuring success for every student and staff member that walks the halls of AC.
Amarillo College has always thrived on strong leadership, and that means being present— whether it’s attending student events, engaging in faculty discussions, or responding to concerns with transparency and action.
Respect for AC’s diverse demographics is another critical expectation. The student body includes a mix of traditional and non-traditional students with many balancing jobs, families and
financial struggles. Dr. Conner must advocate for resources that address these challenges, such as expanding food and basic needs resources, increasing access to mental health services and strengthening financial aid programs. By doing so, she can reinforce AC’s reputation as an institution that truly serves its community.
We also hope Dr. Conner acknowledges the economic and social disadvantages many students face and works to close these gaps. This could mean strengthening workforce development programs, expanding partnerships with local industries, and ensuring that first-generation college students receive the mentorship they need to succeed. AC has been a lifeline for many in Amarillo, and its leadership must continue to prioritize accessibility and opportunity for all.
Most importantly, Dr. Conner must demonstrate a relentless drive to work to achieve success for both students and staff. This includes advocating for faculty support, investing in updated technology and facilities and maintaining the innovative spirit that has propelled AC forward for decades.
Dr. Conner steps into a role defined by a legacy of determination and growth, and her leadership comes at a time when higher education faces numerous challenges, from evolving student needs to economic uncertainty in the current political climate.
As Amarillo College embarks on this new chapter, we hope Dr. Conner embraces the responsibility of leadership with vision, action, and an unwavering commitment to the AC mission. The future of the Badger community depends on it.
