Kyle McGavock has been named the new coordinator of the First Bank Southwest Center at Amarillo College.

“I am excited about the new opportunity and growth, no matter what that is or who that is with,” McGavock said. “And just growth in the community around Amarillo College and seeing the possibilities that could come from this newly renovated facility. I want to help the students get started on their college life.”

As the coordinator, McGavock said he wears many hats in his new role, especially as he is currently covering two positions until his former position can be filled.

“I’d say that I do a little bit of everything,” McGavock said. “I overlook court rentals. I help lead the student workers and their growth here at the college. I go over financial reports so all of the sales and make sure everything is running smoothly. I develop and clean up former policies that we have to make some changes to. I also overlook the maintenance of all of the equipment here at the facility so if any repairs have to be made, I can take part in that.”

Before joining the AC community, McGavock graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports and exercise science in 2020. After receiving that, he took a few years until he had the opportunity to become the night and weekend supervisor at the fitness facility.

“Over time I gained experience in my former position where they felt confident enough to interview me and go through the process of hiring me for this current position,” McGavock said. “While I was at WT I was a recreation student employee so I got a good background. And I learned I enjoyed what I am doing now from that experience.”

Whitney Fernandez, director of community enrichment and wellness, works closely with McGavock and said she is confident in his commitment and leadership skills to enhance the center’s offerings.

“Kyle is a dedicated employee known for his positive demeanor and welcoming presence,” Fernandez said. “He is passionate about helping others and consistently goes above and beyond in his role.”

Destinie Solis, a nursing major and a student worker at the center, said one of McGavock’s biggest qualities is trying to help the younger students find themselves as they navigate college life.

“Working around him is very enthusiastic, because no matter what, he’s got a good attitude,” Solis said. “He always brings good morale to the workplace.”
