Students learn to wrap it up

On Thursday, Sept. 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Student Government Association hosted the “Condom Casino Tour,” a program aimed to help bring sex education out in the open and inform college students about the do’s and don’ts of their sex lives.

“Each year it’s required that SGA bring a safe sex event to campus and to make sure that college students have all the facts.” Jimmy Nye, psychology major said. The Condom Casino Tour works to arouse the knowledge of college students all over the U.S. SGA decided to hit them up and set them up for a one day stand on campus. Students were pulling out chairs and enjoying themselves with sex-friendly versions of gambling games.

The Condom Casino featured some classic casino games including Blackjack, Texas Hold’em, and Fact or “Crap.” Students who participated were given a few chips to get ready for action. After they finished up, they could turn in their chips for free condoms. All games were geared to teaching students some facts about sex education or provide some free condoms. “Before we would just have a speaker come on campus for a one-hour long talk, and that wasn’t as engaging for students, especially for a topic like sex.” Jenna Welch, Student Life Specialist said.

SGA hoped that this would provide a bit more involvement from students when it comes to talking about sex. “I think that doing it this way removes the stigma that sex is a taboo subject.” Welch said. SGA emphasized that it’s important that students’ think with their heads before engaging in any sexual acts.

Welch said that many students would feel a bit awkward coming to the table to play sex education games. “I think it’s a little awkward at first, but after playing it wasn’t as bad,” Christian Gibbons, physics major, said. Many still won’t discuss sex out in the open, but hopefully this is a step in the right direction.
