Intramural athletic program gets a new director

Amarillo College intramural participants have a new leader this semester.

Calee Follins took the position J.R. Norman left vacant. Follins recently was the girls basketball coach at Highland Park.

Follins said there are a number of new events planned for all AC students this spring and they’re all available to any student who wants to sign up.

The first half of the semester will include events such as basketball, which started Jan. 29.

Basketball games are scheduled each Thursday until March, when regionals will be hosted at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

After spring break, a softball league will begin.

There also will be a one-day outdoor soccer tournament April 23 and a one-day sand volleyball tournament April 30 at Ellwood Park at 100 South Jackson St.

Nearing the end of the semester, there will be a dodgeball tournament May 7 and a paintball night May 8 at Aggression Paintball at 4911 Dumas Dr.

Both are expected to be big student events, Follins said.

With new events and the addition of leagues such as flag football scheduled for the fall semester, Follins is intent on giving the intramural programs a fresh start.

“I think students can expect more structure,” Follins said. “We’re putting more online, and we’ve been working on budgets. Paintball will be new.”

Follins said the program won’t be “reinventing the wheel” but that students certainly will be able to see more options soon.

More information will be added online to both the AC website and the AC intramurals Facebook page.

Students at Carter Fitness Center seemed equally optimistic for the upcoming intramural programs.

“It’s a lot more than people realize,” said Macy Slagle, a sports and exercise science major. “Students get a chance to compete statewide.”

Josh Blashill, CFC supervisor, said intramural athletics is the largest student organization on campus.

“It’s free,” he added.

Carter Fitness Center is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and students are encouraged to stop by at any time to sign up for their desired team.

Staff members are on hand to answer questions that students may have about the activities and the facility.
