AC Pantry collects food for students in need

An Amarillo College student association, is stepping up to help students who need financial assistance. The AC Pantry has opened a new location on the West Campus at 6222 W. 9th Ave.

Lynae Jacob, pantry supervisor, started the AC Pantry, a food bank for AC students and faculty in need, on February 1, 2012.

Karen Logan, administrative clerk, said the food pantry service will be based on an as needed basis for each student or faculty member with a maximum of two times monthly, and get one grocery bag each time.

The Vocational Nursing Student Association decided to take the AC Pantry on as a community project and is collaborating with the AC Pantry on Washington Street Campus.

“The goal is to help students or staff members who can not afford food,” Tamara Rhodes, instructor-LVN-vocational nursing, said.

The AC Pantry needs non-perishable food and hygiene items. Elizabeth Sharp, instructor-LVN-vocational nursing, said that peanut butter, tuna and canned meat are high in demand.

The AC Pantry in the West Campus will be putting on a food drive this week and next week. All donations are welcome.

Any donations that want to be made to the pantry on the Washington Street Campus contact Karen Logan at 806-371-5267. For money donations, make the check out to the AC Foundation and let them know the donation is to go to the AC Pantry.

If there are any donations that want to be made towards the West Campus contact Connie Lax at 806-354-6015.
If there is need for food or assistance contact Karen Logan on the Washington Street Campus or Connie Lax on the West Campus. Call ahead before heading to any one of the two locations.

The pantry on Washington Street Campus is located at Parcells Hall Room 204. Hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday thru Thursday.

The AC Pantry on the West Campus is located at Jones Hall Room 275. Hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday thru Friday or when the school is open.

Make sure to call before heading over to these locations.
