Who’s that girl? It’s Jess!”
So ends the theme song at the beginning of another episode of New Girl, a laugh-out-loud hit comedy TV series on Fox.
I discovered it on Netflix with a roommate in Dallas back in 2013. After revisiting it, I recommend this show to everyone.
Zooey Deschanel plays Jessica Day, a quirky elementary teacher. She catches her boyfriend with another girl and decides to be spontaneous by responding to a Craigslist ad for a roommate with three single, unknown men.
Upon meeting the three men, Jess cries while telling them her life story while they quizzically stare at her. Her unusual behavior causes the guys to contemplate their decision as to whether she should stay with them. After arguing for a couple of minutes, they finally come to a decision: Jess is in!
Jess’s three new roommates include Nick Miller, Schmidt and Winston Bishops. Though Jess is the main character, the plot line often focuses on the lives and problems of her roommates and her best friend, Cece.
Nick Miller, played by Jake Johnson, is a law school dropout in his early 30s. He is a bartender and absolutely hates repairmen. This hate drives him to not only fix, but personalize, everything he touches. He pretty much hates people and would rather be alone and out of situations that involve others. Somehow he always ends up in the middle of every circumstance he tries to avoid.
Schmidt, played by Max Greenfield, is a flamboyant pretty boy. After losing a lot of weight post-college, he gained a lot of confidence – maybe a bit too much. He is basically your typical “douche.” The other roommates even have a “douchebag jar” he must pay into pretty regularly for his antics.
Winston Bishops, played by Lamorne Morris, joined the show after Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.) left. Winston played basketball in Latvia, then returned back to the loft. Though he is an extremist who takes pranks way too far, he is truthfully sensitive.
Jess’s best friend Cece (Hannah Simone), has been with Jess through her ups and downs. In one season, a doctor tells Cece if she wants kids, she needs to start now, leaving her with an extreme decision that may affect a roommate.
One of the main things that I like about this show is that it is untraditional. Society has a stubborn mindset about graduating from college, getting married and popping out babies. No one does that anymore. People still are trying to find themselves every day. This show allows viewers to see that it is OK to not have everything figured out and to reset.
