New Year’s resolutions often start out with fitness being a priority. The gym can be intimidating, however, with machines that newcomers may not know how to operate, or in most cases, just getting into a new routine can be downright scary.

Badger Fit Night is a monthly event to help Amarillo College students, faculty, staff and their family members join in on the fun of getting fit together.

Some may view fitness as a form of torture, but with this month’s fitness night theme being body flow, a slower tempo of tai chi, yoga and pilates, it will make a soothing atmosphere.

According to www.lesmills.com, body flow is low intensity, meaning the focus is on entering the body. The workout consists of “controlled breathing, concentration and a carefully structured series of stretches.”

After a day of classes, stretching may be the much-needed stress reliever students and faculty members are be seeking.

At 9 p.m. the first Monday of each month, students can convene at Carter Fitness Center and sweat out all the extra energy they have left over after school.

Last month’s Fit Night debuted Insanity, the much-talked-about workout involving plyometrics as well as yoga and strength training.

With an AC ID, students can access the event for free, and with $2, family and friends can join as well.

Tricia McGuire, a physical education instructor, has established her background education with a history at Gold’s Gym.

McGuire said Fit Night is a social gathering that can promote various classes AC offers. In April, Fit Night will focus on Zumba, the popular Latin-inspired dance workout.

“Badger Fit Night is a fun way to enjoy different workouts, meet new people and try something out of your comfort zone,” said liberal arts major Leanna Taylor.

For fitness professional majors who may have missed a class, attending a Fit Night can erase an absence.

Whether losing the “freshman fifteen,” the winter weight or trying to put the edge back into a daily workout, checking out Badger Fit Night can only help students’ future endeavors to get into shape.
