AC service provides computer first aid

Need help downloading Microsoft Office or fixing a cracked iPhone screen? Amarillo College provides a computer repair service for students and staff at the bookstore on the Washington Street Campus. The service has been offered for almost two years and offers a range of affordable repair options. “When we started selling more computers, we found out there were a lot of students who needed help with them,” said Andrew Flores, a consumer electronics buyer. “Because of this, we decided to go ahead and create the Computer Service Center.”
Many services are offered for free, such as cleaning and optimization, factory resets, diagnostics and warranty registration. Some services, such as hardware repair, virus removal, data backup and data transfer/recovery, require a fee. Repair prices are designed to be affordable for any part-time or full-time college student or faculty member, Flores said. Another goal for the service is to provide internship opportunities to students in AC’s computer programs to help them learn and prepare for real-world experiences. Flores focuses on the more difficult issues with devices, while the interns observe his techniques and learn through visualizing how to solve the technology issues.”This service will benefit students by allowing them to get the opportunity of first aid help instead of the frustration of having to wait for help, especially when there is an assignment due,” said Arleth Pamela, a mass media major.

The Computer Service Center also provides a backup computer if a service will take longer than usual. Having a backup device prevents students from stressing about assignments that are due while their computer is being repaired. Garrett Wilbanks, a general studies major, said he believes the service will help students keep up with their classes. “If their computer is effective, then so is the student,” Wilbanks said. The computer repair center is open from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays and from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.
