Intramural Sports coordinator Trent Oneal encourages students to join the Intramural Sports program at Amarillo College. “Intramural Sports is a recreational sporting program, students and staff are always free to come participate and watch,” Oneal said.
According to Oneal, just showing up will get you involved in a game, however for the leagues and tournaments, there is an app that you need to download called “IM Leagues.” From there you will be able to see all the sports listed and you can create a team or a team can adopt you.
The lineup for this semester includes traditional sports like basketball, volleyball and pickleball, along with two exciting new additions, ultimate Frisbee and sand volleyball.
Both sand volleyball and ultimate Frisbee will be held at John Stiff Memorial Park. “We’re debuting both sand volleyball and ultimate Frisbee this semester. Ultimate Frisbee will be a two-day event on April 8 and April 15,” Oneal said.
Sonography major Jaycee Winborne said that she has never been involved with athletics, but Intramural Sports has helped her step out of her comfort zone. “I wasn’t really involved in sports in high school, and coming here I didn’t know about Intramural Sports,” Winborne said. “But after participating in Intramural Sports last fall, I am excited for the spring semester and new events coming to intramural sports. I am also excited to make more friends,” Winborne said.
Winborne is particularly excited about the upcoming sand volleyball tournament. “I can’t wait to play sand volleyball and connect with others. My main goal is to win, “Winborne said. Sand Volleyball is set to begin May 1 at John Stiff Park.
For new students who may not know, the program will have a game called “Zombies versus Humans.” This is a campus-wide game, similar to Capture the Flag. “Zombies versus Humans” rules include running all over campus trying to avoid the zombies, find missing items and bring them back to headquarters.
Another fan-favorite game is called “Gotcha,” where students are given a photograph of another student and a can of silly string. The objective is to find that student and then spray them with silly string to eliminate them in the game. However, the trick is that someone also has a photo of you.
Animation major Filimon Aleman said he has had a great experience while participating in the Intramural sports program. He has been participating every semester for the last two years. Aleman states “ I have definitely made a lot more connections and a bigger friend group that loves getting active,” Aleman said. “This has also helped me tune into the college community and culture.”
Aleman has participated in volleyball, tennis, basketball, soccer and every other league or challenge that has been held up to this point. “Since participating in intramural sports, it has helped me try harder academically, it has also given me a vibe of how sports were in high school and encouraged me to make good grades.”
