For Amarillo College students seeking to blend their love of music with a tight-knit team, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble provides a platform where voices take center stage and harmonies shine.
The group, typically made up of four to six members, is a cappella with a distinct jazz emphasis. Students interested in becoming part of the ensemble must go through an audition process, which Dr. Fryml described as intense and rigorous. Members study and perform a cappella and modern experimental compositions for a small vocal combo.
“It’s fun but challenging,” Hannah Gurule, a music major and member of the ensemble, said. “It’s different from regular choir groups, and that’s what makes it exciting.”
According to Vocal Jazz Director Nathaniel Fryml, each rehearsal begins with vocal warmups and blending exercises before the ensemble dives into their current musical pieces. Students rehearse in the Music Building on the Washington Street Campus every Tuesday and Friday. Soon, they will begin adding sound equipment as performances approach.
For the students, the ensemble is more than music. It’s a way to stay engaged in campus life. Members said the experience helps them meet new people and find a break from the grind of everyday classes.
Beyond concerts, the ensemble fosters friendships and memories. One highlight for students was a group breakfast at Chick-fil-A, notably without their director present. The lighthearted tradition reflects the supportive atmosphere that students said makes the ensemble special.
Collaboration is a key aspect of the ensemble’s vision. Dr. Nathaniel Fryml mentioned potential partnerships with the Experimental Theatre group. The AC Vocal Jazz Ensemble will unite with the AC Jazz Band for the upcoming “Fiesta Under the Stars” event.
Some members bring unique backgrounds to the group. One student with previous show choir experience joined the ensemble to continue performing. Another has roots in the ensemble that stretch back 30 years, returning to AC to reconnect with the music.
he Vocal Jazz Ensemble at Amarillo College has become a prominent part of the college’s music program, offering concerts throughout the semester. The ensemble’s repertoire challenges singers and provides audiences with engaging performances.
AC’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble has performances throughout the fall semester, including appearances at “Fiesta Under the Stars” on Sept. 27; the “Gospel and Gershwin” concert on Oct. 7; the “AC Jazz Concert” on Nov. 18 and the “Lessons and Carols” holiday concert on Dec. 7.
Fryml said that the Vocal Jazz Ensemble is open to students of all majors who have a love and appreciation for music. “Come out and make music with Amarillo College,” he said. For more information contact Fryml at 806-371-5344 or njfryml@actx.edu.
