Amarillo College students say they usually feel as if they don’t have time to stop and take a breath. As a part-time or full-time student, having a family and a job, finding spare time for leisure can be difficult.
Despite their hectic schedules, some students find the time to do other activities outside class, whether it be hanging out with friends or giving back to the community. Nursing major Paola Alcantar said she enjoys spending her free time being active and hanging out with friends.

“We usually go rock climbing at Palo Duro Canyon and to this trampoline place,” she said. General studies major Darcy McMahon is a full-time student. When she is not in school, she hangs with friends, works out at the gym and sometimes even goes on road trips. “I went to Oklahoma with my friends last time, and it was really fun just doing something spur-of-the-moment,” she said.

McMahon said she plans to go on more unplanned road trips with friends just because it’s a different, fun experience. Former AC student Halei Story said when she was in school, she had little free time.“I was working as well as being a full-time student, and finding just spare time was hard,” Story said. “When I actually did have spare time, I would spend it with my animals or just giving back to the community.”

Story said she would help the community by cleaning up highways as well as being part of PASO, the Panhandle AIDS Support Organization. If not busy studying, biology major Colton Drown listens to music. “I listen to pumped-up songs and like to hang with friends,” Drown said.

“Even though there isn’t much to do here in Amarillo, we just go out and cruise the town.” He also gets involved with AC activities. “I was signed up for the Badger Hearts, which helps out with foster kids, as well as I am trying out for the Film Club here at Amarillo College,” Drown said.
