Amarillo College officials announced the name of the newly-renovated fitness center Oct. 13 as the FirstBank Southwest Center, and received a $3 million gift from the bank, making them the founding athletic sponsor of Amarillo College.

“Our college is blessed to have unwavering community support and backing that has enabled, not only the institutional and academic enhancements that have led to our national recognition, but backing that has made possible the many physical changes that are evident everywhere you look on all of our campuses,” said Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart, president of AC.

Andy Marshall, president and chief executive officer at FirstBank Southwest, said it’s the largest single gift in their 115 year history.

“We take great pride and sincere pleasure in presenting this $3 million check for the transformation of Carter Fitness Center into FirstBank Southwest Center as well as toward the accelerated enhancement of AC sports programs in general,” Marshall said.

As said in a news release, AC Director of Athletics, Mark White, said FirstBank Southwest will receive, among other benefits, recognition during home games in all Badger sports, including signage at all home venues. Some games will be designated FBSW days/nights.

The new $3 million gift provides a significant boost to AC’s $45 million comprehensive campaign, Badger Bold. Lowery-Hart said it also represents the single-largest philanthropic gift ever received in AC’s 93-year history.

Once open, the FirstBank Southwest Center will host home games for the volleyball team, offices and workout facilities for the Badger baseball and cross-country teams as well. It will also serve as a top-notch fitness center for AC students, faculty and staff. Community memberships will also be available.
