The Amarillo College Choir put on a variety show Feb. 20 called Badgeriety.

The show took place in the Concert Hall Theater on the Washington Street Campus. It consisted of a variety of songs from different musical genres such as jazz, choral, pop, and a cappella.

A variety of acts included solos, duets, choir pieces and instrumental pieces, and the AC vocal jazz ensemble performed an a cappella song.

The entire show, except for a song by the jazz ensemble, was put together in a month by the student choir members.

“We were deciding whether we were going to do a show,” said Dr. Steven Weber, music department chairman and choral activities director. “I told them, ‘You have until this date to come up with some individual acts or duets and perform at least part of it, so I know you can do it.’ That’s how we determined if we could pull it off or not.”

Students were involved in selecting the order of events, staging and advertising.

“Everybody pitched in doing something. That was the cool part about it,” Weber said.

The purpose of the show was to raise funds for an upcoming choir tour.

“Every year the AC concert choir goes on a choir tour,” said Sean Jones, a vocal performance major and choir member. “This is to raise money for bus fees, because we take a charter bus, and hotel rooms.”

The choir plans to spend a three-day weekend in San Antonio the last week of April.

“We’re hoping to get the opportunity to sing in a church, to have our own concert,” said Tyler Long, a vocal performance major and Weber’s work-study student, “as well as performing in a church service on Sunday morning.”

The choir has to earn more money this year than in previous years. “Costs have risen significantly,” Weber said. “Our budget has pretty much stayed the same. That requires us to have to fund-raise.”

One way the choir tried to earn more money was by filming the performance and selling the DVDs. The show did profit.

“I think that we cleared about $600 or something, which is great,” Weber said.

People who wish to support the choir can write checks to the Amarillo College Choir or the AC Foundation Choral Music

Support Fund and turn those checks in to Weber or the AC Foundation.
