Members of the AC media department visit the Fort Worth Zoo after competing in the annual TIPA competition. AC students won a total of 22 awards against about 50 other Texas colleges and universities.

Attending the TIPA convention were student media members Perla Arellano, Amanda Castro-Crist, Vanessa Garcia, Hutcheson, Myers, Prestwood, Relph and Rollins along with student media assistant Donna Salter and adviser Mike Haynes.

Advisers for The AC Report are Jill Gibson and Brian Frank. Advisers for The Ranger, AC Current and acranger.com are Gibson and Haynes.

“We always stress that the purpose of student media is to train students and serve the AC campuses, not to win awards,” Haynes said. “But awards are icing on the cake and another incentive for our students to do their best.

“I’ve been at AC 22 years, and these 22 awards are the most we’ve won in this competition during that time. Our students are building on a legacy of journalism at AC that started many decades ago.”

Two recent AC graduates also received TIPA honors in Fort Worth as 2011-12 Ranger editor Richerson, now editor of the student newspaper at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, took first place in the on-site copy-editing contest and Brooke Self, a former Ranger reporter now on the Prairie staff at West Texas A&M, received honorable mention in public relations crisis management. Former AC reporter Ashley Hendrick, now editor of WT’s Prairie, was on hand as her staff also won multiple awards.
