Take advantage of the college experience

People always are telling you to go to college and that it will be a great opportunity and that it will only help you in the future. Well … they are right. So here are some things you should know. It is OK to get involved. Here on the Washington Street Campus, there are a lot of different ways to get involved with organizations and clubs. Most of the time, all you really need to do is show up to some meetings and maybe help with some events, and before you know it you are an active member of a group or organization. Learn your own study skills early. It will help you to succeed in all your classes, whether you like the class or not. If you know how to study, then you will know what you are studying, and you will be more prepared when it comes time for those exams. Here on campus there are group studies you can get involved in, and there even are tutorials you can attend where a tutor can help mentor you on an effective way to study. Get outside your comfort zone and try new things. It is OK to ask questions, it is OK to attend events, and it is OK to meet new people. Sometimes you can make friends for life just by stepping outside your comfort zone and engaging in conversations. Be active in what you are doing. Go to your classes regularly, pay attention, do your homework and stay ahead. Chances are if you are paying attention to your work, you will be succeeding in what you are doing and making the grades we all wish to make. College really does give you different opportunities such as education, relationships, skills and jobwise. All of which help you in life and help you to better not only yourself but the people around you. Expect more from yourself. Don’t limit yourself, and don’t let anything define you. Set up high goals for yourself and really work to achieve them – and once you have, set more. Don’t let things stop you from reaching your goals, make yourself better and always reach to get higher then you are now. Three simple rules of life:

• If you don’t go after what you want in life, you will never get it.

• If you never ask, the answer will always be no.

• If you don’t step forward, you will always be in the same place.

So don’t be afraid to chase after what you want, ask the questions that people are afraid to ask and always keep moving forward.College gives you the opportunity to be anything you want to be. Get involved, open new doors, meet new people, make new friends and achieve the goals you set out for. Who you were or who you are do not define what you could become.
