Let’s be mildly entertaining

Let’s Be Cops, a movie about two buddies pretending to be cops, had the misfortune of coming out the same weekend as the Ferguson, Missouri, shooting. when eyes across the nation were focused on police brutality and misconduct.

Still, the movie finished third in its opening weekend, grossing almost $18 million.

The movie follows two friends who are down on their luck and decide to dress as cops when they misunderstand that a masquerade ball isn’t a costume party. Ryan (Jack Johnson), a struggling actor, and Justin (Damon Wayans Jr.), a failing video game developer, find out that people really think they’re 5-0s. They run with it.

After the masquerade ball, they are reminded how much they have failed in the real world. They start walking down the sidewalk and find out ladies who normally ignore them are attracted to the new men in uniform.

Justin becomes unnerved with the whole thing, but his buddy, Ryan, takes this new sense of power to another level. He decides to go out and buy a car on the Internet.

Unfortunately, they find themselves in a real-life, dangerous crime scenario while playing make-believe.

The movie starts off with a chance to find itself a new audience like other stupid comedies such as Old School and Pineapple Express. However, after starting off on a hot streak when they first don the cop uniforms, the movie loses direction and goes nowhere. It has a hard time finding the chemistry we have become accustomed to in a stupid, dark humor movie.

The movie can’t be only gags but needs something witty enough to make you think and keep you drawn into the story. No one likes it when the funniest parts are in the previews and there is nothing in between the jokes in the full-length film.

A movie that starts off edgy and finds itself without any substance is not funny after a great lead to start off. Maybe next time the writers will find their niche and learn how to carry the humor throughout the movie.

If you want to waste admission, then I’d say go ahead and go watch this movie. You’d be better off waiting for Redbox or Netflix to release it so you can save some money and have the option of turning it off rather than having to walk out of a dark theater.
